The Red Wheelbarrow

Chickadee likes poetry.

family portrait

Chickadee has drawn a picture of her family: God, Papa, Mama, Dandy, and herself. I love that she thinks that when God hangs out with our family, He is smiling.

THINK!

I am so excited about one of Dandy's Christmas gifts. One of the tools we use with him is the idea of THINK wherein each letter is linked some criteria which ought to be considered before one starts to speak. He has some issues with blurting out really weird, hurtful, or meddlesome thoughts.

My blog-friend Kim, over at Bookworms Bookmarks, has made our THINK into a beautiful piece of wall art which we can hang in his bedroom.

She also does a beautiful Engrosser script (a style of Copperplate) that is written with a pointed pen instead of a broad, flat nib. Kim can do all sorts of different lettering styles (called 'hands' by the calligraphy crowd). Go take a peek at her work: Bookworms Bookmarks.

Last month, My Gift and Dandy got to go to a family reunion in New Mexico where Dandy got some pottery wheel lessons from his Great-Uncle Fred.

Reign of Ellen calendar

Y'all know Ellen, right? Even though she hasn't updated her blog -- Reign of Ellen -- in ages, she is very cool and nifty and so forth. One of my favorite aspects of her blog is her cutesy-crazy drawings. I can never decide if her characters are demented or endearing, and as that rather reflects my own mental state, I really like them.

So, I was walking through Rite-Aid the other day, and guess what I saw on the shelf?
Ellen has a calendar! I can't prove it, but I think Ellen commented on my blog once, or maybe I commented on hers and she responded, but either way, it was a kick to see a part of someone I knew from blogland out there in real life. I got so excited I bought all they had: 2.

If you want one, you can get them at Dayspring for $3.25 which is not enough. The cute stickers alone are worth that much.

I've posted about Ellen before. She shared the excellent e-book: What Jesus Said, which if you haven't read, please do, even if especially if you don't 'believe in Jesus', whatever that means.

Carl Larsson

Who is Carl Larsson, you ask? He is -- in my view -- the greatest thing to ever come out of Sweden, with the exception of my Great Grandparents on the Lind side and the old spinning wheel that they brought with them.
Carl Larsson (1853-1919) was Swedish artist who worked in oils and watercolors, but my favorite of his works is
his home at Sundborn. The house is beautifully painted and decorated with the distinctive Larsson style.

Here are a few shots of the interior of their home in Sundborn, Sweden.

Carl Larsson's wife, Karin Larsson, did the textiles: the lovely curtains, table linens, and bedding. Carl Larsson did the building and trim work and detailing.

I'm on a new Carl Larsson kick because, thanks to Elle, I've found a great Carl Larsson source that even has a few things I haven't seen before.

swimming

We got to go swimming. In the sun. In a warm pool. For two hours.

This was us, swirling and tumbling in the water.

Isn't this artwork marvelous? You can see more at VladStudio.

arts and crafts

I love the look of concentration. He is determined to get it just right, and from the look of his smile, he appears to have nailed it.

Speaking of nailing . .
.

. . . guess what he built. Crosses. For when we all die and go to live in heaven, we can put the crosses on our 'dead people park'. It's good to be prepared I guess. Dandy has lots of questions to ask God, so we do talk about God and heaven a lot.

Why did Grandpa have to get hurt?
is a frequent question, along with, Why did my Russian Mama leave me at the orphanage? and Do goats go to heaven? Dandy is never ever dull.
