Friday Poetry: Cold Poem by Mary Oliver

We are in a cold snap, with snow expected this weekend: perfect weather for this Mary Oliver piece:

Cold Poem

Cold now.
Close to the edge. Almost
unbearable. Clouds
bunch up and boil down
from the north of the white bear.
This tree-splitting morning
I dream of his fat tracks,
the lifesaving suet.

I think of summer with its luminous fruit,
blossoms rounding to berries, leaves,
handfuls of grain.

Maybe what cold is, is the time
we measure the love we have always had, secretly,
for our own bones, the hard knife-edged love
for the warm river of the I, beyond all else; maybe

that is what it means the beauty
of the blue shark cruising toward the tumbling seals.

In the season of snow,
in the immeasurable cold,
we grow cruel but honest; we keep
ourselves alive,
if we can, taking one after another
the necessary bodies of others, the many
crushed red flowers.

noisy elephants

Mr. Andy, Occupational Therapist: Do you like elephants?

Chickadee: No, they make too much noise while we sleep.

Who knew?

dislocated thumb

I just realized that I never told you the unnerving story of the dislocated thumb.

The KitchenAid mashed potatoes recipe was requested for Christmas dinner at my Mom's. Chickadee begged to help, so I set her up with a safe peeler and a pile of potatoes. Alas, she switched to an unsafe peeler and sliced off most of her fingernail and quite of bit of the finger underneath it. I don't mean the end of her nail, I mean the top.

So, of course a great deal of screaming and blood-spurting and chaos ensued. I scooped her up the wrong way -- the not-safe-for people with arthritic hands way -- and of course my thumb gave way. Clunk. There it was, dangling askew. What could I do but shove it back into place and carry on? I had a injured sweetie-pie to tend to.

We finally got the bleeding stopped and were done screaming and flailing about and were merely whimpering and cowering in the easy chair when Papa got home. He took charge, applying bandages and generally soothing us all. Then I noticed it.

My thumb hurts!!

That was a few days before Christmas and you know what? Her finger is all healed, and my thumb still hurts. Ah the joys . . .

Ta Da!

Thanks to Mom2Fur I found a useful new toy today, the TaDa lists, which you can view in my sidebar right under the pet pictures. I hope that this will help me remember to leave the computer and go live my life. Wish me luck.

very weird question

So, here I go, about to embarrass myself . . .

I taste bitter. I first noticed it when I licked my lips or ate with my fingers. I got suspicious and licked my arm. BLECH. I taste bitter, like aspirin. I took a shower and even when squeaky clean and well-rinsed, my skin tastes bitter. What is up with this?

Here is what I take each day:
:: a multi-vitamin
:: 1,500 mg of Glucosamine Sulfate
:: 18 mg of Iron
:: 20 mg Lexapro
:: 1,135 IU of Vitamin D
:: 1,250 IU of Vitamin A (cod liver oil)
:: Ibuprofren - variable quantity

So, what kind of dread malady do I have now?

This post is getting lots of google search hits, but no one is commenting. At least leave a comment so that we know we are not the only ones with with. I found one other post about bitter lips & skin. What have you found?

I went off the iron supplements but that didn't help anything.
