Mother's Day for the not-quite-yet mothers

There are many waiting mothers in the adoption community for whom Mother's Day is hard. Really hard. I stopped going to church on Mother's Day because I couldn't not weep.

If you know a waiting mother, give her a hug. Ask her how you can pray for her today. Don't recite glib stories or cliches; she's being reciting them to herself for years and they don't really help.

After seeing me slip out the back one year, an older woman hugged me and merely said, "This must be hard." It meant a lot to me that, rather than try to cheer me up with the hope of the future-someday-we-hope-so day, she was willing to acknowledge the reality of that day and provide comfort to me in the place where I was.
