Child: I'm bored.
Mom: Would you like to do some chores?
Child: Not really.
Mom: Okay. Let me know if you change your mind.
. . . time passes . . .
Child: I'm bored.
Mom: Oh, you changed your mind about those chores. Okay, please . . . .
Works for me! I should add that we have a big yard to play in, trees to climb, swings to swing, books to read, games to play, projects to tinker with, animals to play with, and -- in the summer -- a pool. There is really no excuse to be drifting about listlessly.
:: edited to add that the chores assigned come from the Chore Jar, so I don't have to fiddle around with deciding which chore.

I think I will throw that in my bag of Mommy tricks!
Sounds like our house.
Who is it that keeps a jar filled with mixed ideas and chores for those moments? Rhonda, maybe? You reach in and draw out a slip and that's what you must do. It could be reading for 20 minutes, washing dished, eating an ice cream cone...
We never mentioned being bored growing up. The solution was always scrubbing the bathroom floor.
Kate, that is I. We still have the jar and draw one thing each after each meal.
Suzanne- I love this segment of your blog. Gives me ideas for how to handle my bean when she gets bigger.
Audrey! How fun to find you here. I'm saving your blog for my 'after kids are in bed reading treat'. Will there be pics?
Suz, what a goof am I! I guess since the chore jar sounded like it would end all hassles I thought (from the new hassles) that it must be someone else's.
But, see...I like the idea and remembered it. That's gotta count for something!
