kindle

So what is your take on Amazon's Kindle? My read-a-book-in-the tub-heart says "no thanks", and my techie-heart says, "cool". What do you think?

I've been volunteering with DPF (http://www.pgdp.net) for years, making books available for download from Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org). I don't often read the books I work on, because it is so hard to read a book on a computer monitor. The kindle is supposed to be more like a piece of paper, and less like a monitor. I'd love to have one, but for $400?.... I'll wait till they come down a little!

I dunno. I LOVE my ipod and love getting rid of paper, but it just doesn't seem the same to curl up with a cup of coffee, by the fire, with a good...digital reader...

My Kindle-lust was kindled with the first time I saw one at Amazon. I'd LOVE to have my library with me at all times.

I must repent of my coveting now.

My concern about e-readers is eye fatigue. I know the Kindle is supposed to have a different kind of screen, but I'd have to hold one in my hand and really try it out with my own eyes before I'd shell out the cash.

Plus I love the tactile feel of paper.

See, that's my dilemma. The bathtub. And the price. And the whole BOOK-experience.

Being able to get any book immediately IN RUSSIA has a big draw, though...

I don't know anyone who actually HAS one, so I can neither borrow nor inquire.

I've been wondering this same thing! Dh and I agree we would both like to try it out. Dh used to work at Amazon but I doubt he could pull the whole "former employee" thing to swing one.

At the rate at which they are selling them (did you see they were actually sold out for over a week?) we should eventually know someone who has one and would let us try it out for a spell.

Very fun concept!

I think it depends on your circumstance. Technology will forever loom ahead with new and exciting things. But sometimes newer isn't better. But for gpa- it will be helpful. For people who need bigger font, it is a gift. For me? I love the smell of old books.
